How Can I Dress Up my Stair Stringers - Old Pine Doesn't Match Red Oak Treads & Risers
l have prepped the existing steps by sawing off the tread noses and
purchased prefinished Bella Red Oak to match my floors. l have
a problem with the stringers as their is wood missing where the old tread
nosing was removed (The stringers support the treads). Is there Red Oak
Boarding made to dress up the stringers here?Should l take the nosing
removed and cut pieces to fill the gaps in the stringers? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.jramirelirr.org
Here is a great idea I plan to use someday soon in my house.
Tile them! The link below shows tiled risers, but you should be able to
tile the stringers. Either use one large tile per stringer, cut in an
approximate triangle, or use smaller even 1'' tiles.
Without seeing ur stairs, I can only toss out some general
ideas - some of which might work better than others, depending on ur
particular situation.
Any place missing wood could be filled in with new wood, or putty, &
stained or painted, as desired.
An oak veneer can be applied, & stained to match the flooring. (A matching/coordinating laminate might also be possible). Decorative trim might be applied - this could be anything from moulding, to carvings, etc. And of course there is always the option to add more solid oak lumber to the stairs. Most of the big box home stores sell red oak in a variety of widths these days, & even carry red oak stair treads with a bullnose already on them. If you'd like to post, or email a photo to me, I'd be happy to recommend something more specific. Have Fun
You can buy luan plywood which is less than 1/4'' thick and
recover the risers. Or you could carpet the risers.
